At some point we’ve all pinched a finger when closing a drawer or moving an object. It wasn’t a fluke. The reason for hand injuries is lack of attention or awareness of our position. While minor pinches may seem harmless, our hands are the tools we need to eat, use for work, hold our children and grandchildren, or to perform daily tasks necessary to our well being.
Major hand injury can cause nerve damage, severe bone displacement and reduced strength to perform normal activities. Always wear protective gloves when doing tasks at work or home that have potential pinch points. Make sure the gloves are right for the task. For example, don’t wear general household cleaning gloves for cutting rose bushes. The thorns or cutting tool can easily puncture the glove material.
Wear the proper sized gloves to prevent lose fitting gloves from entanglement in moving parts of small or large equipment. Loose and floppy gloves can slide around on your hands, and create opportunity for a moving part such as a lathe or saw to grab the end and pull the glove and your hand into the equipment. In a split second a finger is injured or severed completely.
