The phrase we’ve all heard; “we’ve always done it that way.” Just because it’s always been done that way doesn’t make it correct. For a while “doing it the same way” may be fine and you may be very lucky. But eventually luck runs out. Look at your processes and actions on a regular basis. Ask the questions. Is there a better way to do this? Is this the safest way to get this task completed? Am I focused and paying attention or putting myself or crew at risk? Does it really matter if you miss a particular step?
Take five minutes of your time, step back and assess the situation where you are working. Maybe get another person to look at the task to be done. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can pick out safety issues. Five minutes could save a life. The video below shows how the simplest of tasks can cause injury to those not paying attention. Don’t become the workplace statistic.
Feel free to start a conversation around complacency. Get your peers thinking about the topic. Comments identifying companies or individuals by name will not be accepted.
