Who we are

About Newbird Communications

Newbird Communications was established to assist small to large business with writing and editing requirements. The primary focus is on safety and training documentation. The GOAL for Newbird Communications is that every employee, regardless of where they work, goes safely to their workplace and back. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. We can work with your subject matter experts and create accurate and clear documentation that is easily understood by all levels of your organization. Newbird Communications is a registered vendor of several provinces, and holds qualified membership to numerous writing associations.

Meet President Sharon Bird

Newbird Communications owner Sharon Bird has held professional status with the Professional Writers’ Association of Canada (PWAC) since 2004. PWAC recently amalgamated with the Canadian Freelance Guild. She first published in 2000 and has written and/or edited full tourism guides, policies, procedures, manuals and standards, training materials, engineering reports, web content, and business articles. During employment in the oil and gas industry, Sharon was Coordinator, Policy & Procedure for a large oil corporation and responsible for the writing and updates of 1,000 documents. Later employed as QHSE Lead/Technical Writer for an oil & gas pipeline construction company, she coordinated the creation, revision and storage of 10,000 documents across five divisions.

Sharon has completed OH&S Legislative Awareness Training. She earned a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certificate through an employer, and holds a Management Development Certificate from the University of New Brunswick. Membership in numerous writing organizations provides continued professional development for Technical Writing.

In addition to her workplace writing, Sharon has authored more than 40 articles in magazines and newspapers across Canada including Saltscapes, Celtic Heritage, Globe & Mail, and the Telegraph Journal. One article gained international attention from the North American Genealogy Society. Other non-fiction projects include four published books that highlight Canadian history and trivia. Her first historical fiction for youth (8-14) won the Joyce Barkhouse Writing for Children Award in the Writer’s Federation of NS Atlantic Writing Competition in 2002. A second historical fiction, for adults, won Honourable Mention in the David Adams Richards Fiction category in the Writer’s Federation of NB contest in 2021. When not busy with clients, Sharon spends time with family and friends, works in her gardens, writes for pleasure, reads, skates, or strolls in the woods with her dog Winnie (a Bernese Mountain Dog/Golden Retriever mix). Don’t tell anyone, but she also talks to all the neighbourhood birds, dogs and other animals she encounters.
